New seaplane rating
Basic requirements
If you currently hold a private pilot's license or higher, you meet the basic requirements to begin your training as a seaplane pilot. It is therefore not possible to take your basic flight training on a seaplane. To begin training, no special school permit is required from the relevant authorities, but the flight takes place together with an inspector from the Swedish Transport Agency. There is actually no requirement for flight experience beyond an approved PPL, but since seaplane flying is sometimes more complicated than land flying, we recommend that you have at least 100 hours of flight time before completing your seaplane license. Before you begin your training, you must also be a member of Täby Sjöflygklubb and have read the safety regulations and procedures that exist. The training takes place at the club's premises in Hägernäs. Training is currently taking place on a rented Cessna 206 (SE-LVP) departing from Hägernäs.
Theory
The training is carried out according to the club's syllabus and covers approximately 2 days with 5 hours per day and ends with a school exam. Depending on flying experience and general sea/boat experience, additional time may be needed. As a basis for the theoretical training we use the Sea Flight Handbook written by Christer Lundholm and published by KSAK.
Practical flight training
The practical training takes place on a Cessna 206 and covers approximately 8 -10 hours according to the club's syllabus. If the student is not familiar with the C206, the approach to the type will take place at the same time and the required hours will be slightly higher. The price per block hour (bridge to bridge) is approximately 3500 SEK at today's fuel price. However, the aircraft is charged per tachometer hour, which is why the actual hourly cost may vary depending on the exercise. Taxiing, sailing, take-off, etc. The price for a tachometer hour is 3700 SEK. Many years of experience with the training in Täby shows that the ratio of tachometer time/block time is on average approximately 0.75 during a flying season. In the example below: 3700 x 0.75 = 2775, i.e. roughly equal to 2800 SEK in block time.
Costs
Exemplified total cost for seaworthiness for a pilot who is familiar with flying a Cessna 206 and has experience in operating aircraft with a constant speed propeller.
Theory: 1,000 SEK
Block time, (9h á 2800): 25,200 SEK
Membership fee (guest member): SEK 1,500
Teacher's fee (individual agreement with teacher) approx.: 7,000 SEK
Take-off (charged by the Swedish Transport Agency) approx.: 4,000 SEK
Total: 38,700 SEK
Please note that the costs are an estimate. Flight time may vary depending on individual experience and flying fitness. The hourly cost may vary depending on actual tachometer time and flight practice as well as fuel price increases outside the club's control. The flight is charged by the Swedish Transport Agency in accordance with their price list.
