About Täby Seaplane Club
Täby Sjöflygklubb is Stockholm's only flying club that operates with normal-class seaplanes. The club is located in Hägernäs, about 15 km north of Stockholm city. The fact that it is located there is no coincidence. It is located on the historic seaplane base at Stora Värtan, where flights have been conducted since 1912, just a few years after the Wright brothers. At that time, it was the navy that tested airplanes on Värtan's ice. The defense developed the operation and later established the F2 seaplane base in Hägernäs.
Täby Seaplane Club started its operations at Hägernäs in 1968/69 after an initiative by the marine seaplane center F2, which incidentally ended its 56-year operation in 1974. In connection with this, Täby Seaplane Club engaged the flight instructor Gunnar Degramo who started a seaplane school in parallel with the club's operations. The seaplane school was named Skid- and Seaplane. At that time, you could start your flying by completing basic school to an A-certificate at sea and at the same time get your sea license, but today the requirements are a little different.
The club currently has around 80 members. Some are also supporting members, who only have an interest in seaplanes, but do not fly themselves. A large part of our members are also aircraft owners or co-owners, who either have their aircraft stationed in Hägernäs or have it stationed elsewhere but use the club's resources when it comes to refueling, ramp or temporary additional space when visiting the Stockholm region.
Small aviation in the Stockholm area is currently working against the wind with the closure of airfields as the biggest threat. Seaplanes have a slight advantage in this context as take-off and landing sites are widely available, but the need for a safe and functional home port is still crucial for the operation. In 2008, Täby Seaplane Club initiated a project to establish a seaplane center in Hägernäs. This is partly so that we ourselves will have a place for our operations that fits in with the development that is taking place in Hägernäs, but also to offer visiting aircraft and pilots a fixed point in Stockholm. The basis for the operation is the clubhouse that is being built next to the club's site at Hägernäs beach. In addition to the clubhouse of approximately 50 square meters, an improved fueling facility and extended docks were also installed. The clubhouse is also used by housing associations and residents of Hägernäs for meetings or other social activities.
